Cadillac Considering Diesel, Turbo V-6 for Escalade
Engine Options to Give Edge over EcoBoost-Only Navigator
Since its debut, the two hallmarks of the Cadillac Escalade have been its bold styling and V-8 power, traits that carry over in the 2015 model. But if an Automotive News report is to be believed, buyers may soon get some other options under the hood. According to the industry publication, David Schiavone, Escalade’s brand manager, the company is considering both gas and diesel turbocharged V-6 engines, as well as a sportier model, possibly carrying the V-Sport label.
This stands in contrast to its nearest rival, the Lincoln Navigator, which for the 2015 model year, will be offered only with the 3.5L EcoBoost V-6. The 6.2L EcoTec3 V-8 will continue as the standard engine in the Escalade. The additional powertrain options are likely to make the Escalade more popular in overseas markets, where diesel engines are more popular and where there are higher taxes levied on large-displacement engines.
The gas-turbo V-6 will almost certainly be the 3.6L engine under the hood of the Cadillac CTS V-Sport, which in that application produces 420 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. The diesel engine is a bit more of a mystery. The VM Motori 3.0L V-6 used in the Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel is now a wholly FCA-owned powerplant, but until recently, VM Motori was a 50/50 joint venture between Fiat and General Motors. GM could also be quietly developing an in-house turbodiesel V-6 of its own. There’s also the 4.5L Duramax V-8 that GM was developing just prior to its bankruptcy that many believe could still see the light of day, but that engine could be offered as a more economical option on ¾ and 1-ton models rather than 1/2-ton trucks, where the predominant trend seems to be toward V-6 engines.
