Veil Lifted from China Market Buick Envision—Preview of U.S. Model?

More Details Released on Two-Row Midsize Crossover, Smaller than Equinox

Earlier this month, we showed you a sheet-draped silhouette of the upcoming Buick Envision midsize crossover for the China market. Even through the sheer cloth, it was apparent the Envision shared some family styling details with the smaller Encore and larger Enclave. Today, the sheet has come off the Envision, and Buick has announced a few more technical details about its new midsize crossover for the China domestic market.
Compared to the current Chevrolet Equinox, the Envision is about 4 inches shorter, on a 4-inch-shorter wheelbase. Width and height are about the same as the Equinox. Many sources indicate the next-generation Equinox and Terrain will shrink slightly to make them closer in size to competitors such as the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V. Under the hood, the Envision gets a 2.0L I-4 direct-injected turbo producing 256 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque mated to a six-speed automatic with auto stop-start for improved fuel efficiency.
It’s believed to be just a matter of time before Buick fleshes out its U.S. model lineup with a midsize crossover, currently a gaping hole between the large Enclave and subcompact Encore. The Chinese market’s tastes tend to lean toward the more conservative side in terms of styling, something reflected in the Envision’s lines, which depart little from Buick’s established styling orthodoxy. But the Envision’s understated, premium elegance would probably be appealing to many buyers and give Buick a competitive entry in the increasingly crowded mid-premium crossover segment.
