High-Tech Audi Q7 Diesel Hybrids Coming To The U.S.

The Audi Q7 Diesel Plug-in Hybrid

Jul 30, 2014
The Audi Q7 will get a plug-in diesel-electric hybrid drivetrain according to the man responsible for technical development at Audi, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg. The folks at Automotive News Europe caught up with him during a recent event and heard the latest about the future of Audi diesels. Hackenberg revealed that plug-in hybrid diesels will be sold in the US, along with Europe, and that the first to get the drivetrain will likely be the new generation of the Audi Q7 SUV that goes on sale next year.
Hackenberg explained the move saying that "gasoline technology will not supplant the efficiency of diesel" and that "the hybrid will be another argument to go for diesel in the U.S." He said, "We have the combination of low CO2 emissions necessary to meet market demand and regulations, and we have the diesel which gives a lot of torque, which is very necessary for drivability." Recognizing the habits of American drivers, he added, "In the U.S.A. if you look to sportiness it is very important to be quick away from traffic lights. In combination with the electric engine, a diesel hybrid delivers very good torque from the start."
It was also revealed that "the new Q7 will be in the market next year and the electric turbo will come a little bit later in a sporty version called SQ7." Hackenberg also said Audi is considering moving the Audi RS5 TDI into production. Check out the October 2014 issue of Diesel Power on sale August 22 for a closer look at the new RS5 TDI concept that gets more than 44 mpg while racing from 0-60 mph in less than four seconds flat.
