Is GM Building a Raptor-Fighter Based on the Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon?
The ever-capable Ford F-150 SVT Raptor has been a runaway sales-star, and has inspired enthusiasts to keep an eye out for a Raptor equivalent from a competing manufacturer. Until now, we have only seen a worthy opponent in the Mopar Ram Runner, an expensive oddity from the aftermarket division of Chrysler. Being an obscure dealer-installed package, the Ram Runner never achieved anything near the popularity of the Raptor. Now, however, rumors floating out of GM hint at an upcoming Raptor-like off-road package, but not for the full-size 1500 Silverado and Sierra pickups, as everyone would expect.
GM Authority reports that the upcoming 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon (pictured at right) are the most likely models to receive a Raptor-esque off-road package. The Colorado/Canyon trail weapon would be smaller, lighter, and conceivably more agile than its full-sized counterpart from Ford, placing it at a distinct advantage in the eventual head-to-head comparisons. With this approach, the Colorado/Canyon would be bracketed at a lower price group as well, reaching more buyers than the comparably expensive Raptor, which starts at $46,190 with destination.
No details have surfaced yet, but enthusiasts hoping to get a clear picture of the future off-road star can perhaps find inspiration in the Colorado Rally concept that debuted in 2011.
