Range Rover Sport SVR Sets Nurburgring SUV Record at 8:14
These are amazing times we live in. Nowadays, the time to beat at the Nürburgring's challenging Nordschleife is under 7 minutes, and results that were previously only achievable in sports cars are now being recorded by front-drive compacts. Now, the limits have been pushed even farther, as Land Rover claims its Range Rover Sport SVR just set a lap of 8 minutes, 14 seconds -- earning it a record for fastest SUV around the 'Ring.
The record was nabbed by a Land Rover driver at the wheel of a stock production example of the SVR, which debuted last month at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The Range Rover Sport SVR was developed by Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations team, and uses a version of the Jaguar F-Type R Coupe's 550-hp supercharged 5.0-liter V-8. Land Rover says the SVR's handling characteristics were honed on the Nürburgring, though the model retains the all-terrain capability and comfort the Range Rover nameplate is known for. A two-speed transfer case allows the SUV to switch from high to low gear ratios, and the SVR maintains the same 850-mm wading depth as other Range Rover Sport models.
Just how fast is the SVR's 8:14 lap? That's faster than the 2011 BMW 1 Series M Coupe, which recorded an 8:15 lap in 2011. At 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque (370 lb-ft with overboost), the 1M is down from the SVR in power, but it also weighs substantially less. A standard Range Rover Sport weighs 4800-5100 pounds, and even if the SVR is at the low end of that range, getting it to hustle around the 'Ring in 8 minutes and some change is quite a feat.
The Range Rover Sport SVR arrives on dealer lots in 2015, but we hope to drive one sooner than that. Until then, check out the video below to see the SVR on the 'Ring.
