GM Garage? Truck Trend Garage - Readers' Letters

Truck Trend EditorsApr 17, 2014
Dear Truck Trend,
I've read your "Truck Trend Garage" column for years and continue to enjoy it very much. Is it my imagination, or do GM vehicles consistently appear more frequently than all others? In my very unofficial observation, I'd say the frequency is about 70 percent of the time or higher that the questions feature a General Motors product. Even my good friend who owns a repair shop here in Phoenix estimates his repair tickets for GM represent about 75 percent of the total. Keep up the great work. There are many out here who are avid readers.

Scott,
From Alex Steele: Sometimes it's just the luck of the draw, but it makes sense that production volume and reliability could determine the number of questions we receive from owners of specific brand trucks. Here is just an example: In 2011, Ford sold about 585,000 F-Series pickups in the U.S., but combining Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra production, we get nearly 564,000 -- pretty darn close. Ram production wasn't in the ballpark, and Toyota/Nissan only market 1/2-ton models, so they're not a fair comparison. This is purely speculation, and the number of older trucks still on the road is part of the equation, but the reliability/durability of Ford products being a notch above General Motors over the years may be a factor. And perhaps the same holds true for vehicles rolling into repair shops for true repairs, not just for regular maintenance.
