Toyota Rereleases Iconic Land Cruiser 70 Series in Japan

Models Commemorate 30th Anniversary, Only Available for One Year

Edward A. SanchezAug 26, 2014
There have been a lot of retro-inspired models over the last decade, but few, if any, are literal revivals of their storied predecessors. But in the case of the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series, the company is reviving the original about as faithfully as possible, while complying with modern safety, emissions, and regulatory standards. In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the 70 Series Land Cruiser, Toyota will offer the updated classic for one year, and will build as many as 200 units per month.
The straight-edged sheetmetal and styling is pretty faithful to the original model introduced in 1984, but a few concessions have been made to modern safety and performance. The new models get new grilles and headlights. The original 4.0L OHV I-6 has been replaced with Toyota’s 4.0L IGR-FE V-6 (same as the Tacoma and FJ Cruiser) mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The interior has dual front airbags, and ABS is standard on all models. The revived 70 Series also gets optional electric locking front and rear differentials, and an optional winch.
The updated 70 Series models will be offered in passenger (“van”) or pickup configurations, the latter being the first time that configuration has been offered in the Japan home market. In addition to these retro revivals, the Land Cruiser ZX (sold in the U.S. as the Lexus LX 570) and Land Cruiser Prado TX (Lexus GX 460) are being offered in special 30th anniversary editions to commemorate the milestone.
