Watch the 2014 Cheap Truck Challenge on Dirt Every Day
Petersen’s 4Wheel and Offroad Magazine’s annual Cheap Truck Challenge returns for 2014. On this episode of Dirt Every Day, Fred Williams and crew chronicle the battle that includes a 1993 Chevrolet S-10 pickup, a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and a 1975 International 150 pickup. Last year’s event was held in the Arizona desert, but this time around the crew travels to a spot outside Reno, Nev.
In order to qualify for the Cheap Truck Challenge, the four-wheel-drive vehicles must be bought and built for less than $4000. Fred brought the S-10 pickup, while his friend Vern and Rob showed up with the International pickup and Grand Cherokee, respectively. Vern swapped a small-block Chevrolet V-8 into the International that now rides on a set of mud tires. On the other hand, Rob installed some coil spring spacers and trimmed the bumper. He also swapped the all-wheel-drive transfer case for a four-wheel-drive transfer case. Williams was the only one with a V-6 engine and a non-working four-wheel-drive system.
Williams’ S-10 had to be towed up the first hill by one of the support vehicles. The challengers face other obstacles such as driving through gullies and doing donuts in the dirt as well as rock climbing and hill climbs, before closing the event off with a good old-fashioned drag race.
