We Hear: Ford Super Duty Going All-Aluminum Body, New Subcompact CUV to Arrive in Two Years

Karla SanchezAug 19, 2014
We’ve previously reported on many of the refreshed or new models slated for Ford’s lineup, but a report from Automotive News suggests there’s more in store for the next few years, including the addition of a subcompact crossover.
With the Chevrolet Trax and Honda HR-V coming into the picture, it was only a matter of time before we'd see a subcompact crossover from Ford. Scheduled for sometime in late 2016, the automaker will reportedly bring over the Eco-Sport (pictured to the right), though it's likely it will be badged with a different name. Based on the Fiesta platform, the Eco-Sport is developed in Brazil and sold in other markets including India and China. Considering the Eco-Sport sells well overseas, it wouldn't be a bad idea bringing it to the U.S., especially since the segment is heating with new offerings from Honda and Chevrolet.

As far as the existing crossovers go, the report reveals the Ford Escape will likely get the nine-speed automatic transmission in the second half of 2017 for the 2018 model year, in addition to the 1.5-liter EcoBoost I-4 found in the Fusion. Ford previously announced that the midsize Edge will feature an all-new one: a 2.0-liter EcoBoost fitted with a twin-scroll turborcharger. This will be only one of three engine options for the new Edge, with the others being others being a 3.5-liter V-6 and a new 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6. The Edge will also be the first in the Ford lineup to offer an adaptive steering system and an advanced 180-degree front camera.
The Ford Super Duty is being redesigned in the first half of 2016 and is expected to have an all-aluminum body like the F-150. Automotive News claims industry experts said the Super Duty's aluminum makeover is likely, with a detailed Ford report saying it will share the T3 platform and is "likely to feature extensive commonality with the light-duty F-150." This shouldn't come as too much of a surprise since rumors have suggested the bigger truck would take after its smaller counterpart, especially after a Super Duty prototype was caught testing in the desert, where it caught on fire and left behind aluminum-like remnants from the fire.

Although it appears as though things have been winding down for the Flex, it's not ready to go just yet. The seven-passenger box-car has been selling well in California, so the automaker decided to keep it around for a couple more years before deciding whether or not to axe it from the lineup.
