GM started building a new facility for engine design and development, calling it the GM Performance and Racing Center. Located in Pontiac, Michigan, it will house engineers and technicians working on production engines as well as race and advanced technologies.

A Diesel Wins Shell Eco-Marathon
The annual Shell Eco-Marathon is a student-friendly "innovation competition" in America, Europe, and Asia. It's aimed to bring awareness to global energy issues, and to encourage competitors ages 16 to 25 to compete in cars they design and build. The Shell Eco-Marathon Americas version saw a specimen from Louisiana Tech University score First Place for vehicle design, while Prototype Diesel went to Sullivan High School in Indiana, which made 1,899.32 mpg with its entry. For the Urban Concept, Diesel Energy category, Alden-Conger High School in Minnesota garnered first position with its 3,587-mpg vehicle.
Biodiesel and Renewable Diesel Imports Set Record
The U.S. Energy Information Administration noted that imports for biomass-based diesel—biodiesel and renewable diesel—hit record levels in 2013. Growth in domestic biodiesel demand and more access to biodiesel in other countries were credited. The U.S. has actually become a net importer of biomass-based diesel in 2013, having been a net exporter in 2012.

Delphi New Common-Rail Diesel System
Delphi has unveiled a new group of hi-po common-rail systems, such as diesel solenoid injectors, fuel pumps, ECUs, and rails, which will be available later in 2014. For the injectors, injection pressure is up to 2,500 bar. The pump group has single- and two-plunger fuel-lubed pumps and oil-lubed pumps. And a patented oblong rail is new for the rail group.
