First Production Land Rover Discovery Sport Built at Halewood
Seven-Seat Midsize SUV Given to Virgin Galactic
Along with Chrysler, one of the great turnaround stories of the last five years has been Land Rover. India’s Tata Motors came to the British carmaker’s rescue but now finds itself in the position of Jaguar and Land Rover being the biggest contributors to the company’s global success. Kicking off the SUV maker’s new era of hope and global growth was the first production Discovery Sport to roll of the line in Halewood, England. Taking delivery of job one was Stephen Attenborough, commercial director of Virgin Galactic, signifying the long-term partnership the company has entered into with Land Rover as its official vehicle.
Jaguar Land Rover will have cumulatively invested more than $5 billion into product creation and capital expenditures by March 2015 and is the U.K.’s largest vehicle exporter, with more than 80 percent of production being sold outside of the country.
The Sport is the first model introduced from the newly formed Discovery sub-brand, which will ultimately consist of three or more models. The Discovery Sport shares its powertrain with the smaller Range Rover Evoque but adds a larger cabin and cargo area, and a lower price to appeal to a broader array of potential buyers.
