Ford Police Interceptor Utility Among Fastest-Accelerating Cop Cars

Nov 26, 2014
Speeders, beware: Ford is claiming that both its Police Interceptor (PI) utility and sedan models are the quickest law enforcement vehicles in their class.
While the EcoBoost-equipped PI sedan is the outright quickest police vehicle available in the United States, the larger Explorer-based PI utility (a bestseller, according to the company) is no slouch. As tested by the Michigan State Police, the 3.5L twin-turbo SUV bolted to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds, which beat an unnamed 5.3L-powered competitor (likely the Chevrolet Tahoe PPV) by more than 0.7 second.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s independent testing, the EcoBoost PI utility had best-in-class acceleration (compared to other police utility vehicles) and best-in-class stopping distances, and it also was faster in the 0-60 test than the base-model sedans from competitors.
Ford is keen to point out that both the PI sedan and utility were tested with stability and traction control systems fully engaged, as they would be in typical police duty. It must be acknowledged that the EcoBoost engine is optional in both Police Interceptors. The PI utility comes standard with the less powerful 3.7L V-6, with 304 hp and 279 lb-ft of torque, which is still impressive in its own right.
While many police officers bemoan the loss of their beloved Crown Victoria P71s, there’s no denying the added capability of the new Taurus- and Explorer-based police vehicles. If nothing else, their performance figures might make a would-be leadfoot think twice before breaking the speed limit.
