Mercedes-Benz Makes Animated Video Tribute to Vans
Mystery-Mobile, A-Team Van Make Cameo Appearances
The van is one of those under-appreciated workhorses that we see all the time and often take for granted but is an integral and important part of modern life. Mercedes-Benz USA, the regional proprietor for the Sprinter commercial van, commissioned this short minute-and-a-half video produced by Cub Studio and Pluto, giving a history of the van, which of course, Mercedes takes credit for inventing. The video tells the story of rivals Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz out-doing each other with motorized wagon designs.
The premise of the video starts out that Daimler and Benz were competing to see who could design the best motorized wagon to haul beer. With progressively more advanced designsd culminating in their historic partnership, this resulted in the formation of the Mercedes-Benz brand. Of course, a complete history of vans would not be made up entirely of Daimler products, so acknowledgements are made to other van manufacturers in a round-about way, including Volkswagen, GMC, and Ford, if you accept the premise that the Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine was actually an early Ford Econoline.
We may today associate vans mostly with airport shuttles, package delivery, and the cable company, but there’s no denying over the past century, the van has had a prominent role both in real life and on the silver screen.
