Rendered! 2017 Ram 1500 SRT Hellcat
The Hellcat that Hauls
Our fellow gearheads over at TopSpeed.com had a little fun doing some armchair quarterbacking about other possible future applications for Chrysler’s staggeringly powerful 707hp Hellcat 6.2L supercharged V-8. Officially announced for the 2015 Challenger coupe and Charger sedan, the engine has potential applications in any of Chrysler’s rear-wheel-drive vehicles, including the Jeep Grand Cherokee and obviously, the Ram 1500.
The prospect of a hot-rod Ram wouldn’t be without precedent, as Dodge offered the Viper V-10–powered Ram SRT-10 in the early 2000s in both regular and Quad Cab variations. Ford’s current truck hero is the outgoing (though likely soon to be replaced) F-150 SVT Raptor, and GM hasn’t had a legitimate muscle truck since the discontinuation of the Silverado SS.
We think the timing is perfect to bring back an outrageously powerful muscle truck, and Chrysler certainly has all the key ingredients at its disposal. Ram-brand CEO Bob Hegbloom diplomatically dodged a direct answer from a journalist asking if there were any plans for a Ram Hellcat by saying, “Not at this time.” That could be interpreted any number of ways, but some believe that could be a veiled inference that a model may be coming a few years down the road. We certainly hope that’s the case.
