Bentley Considering Second SUV on Customer Interest
Strong Interest in Flagship SUV Prompts Consideration of Second Model
Despite the less-than-glowing critical reception of the EXP 9 F concept a few years ago, which prompted a redesign to the front end, Bentley is reportedly getting a lot of interest in its upcoming SUV model. Initial production targets are for 3,000 units, and more than 4,000 potential customers have expressed interest. This has the Volkswagen Group’s U.K.-based ultra-luxury brand considering the addition of a second SUV model to the Bentley lineup. Although the Bloomberg story didn’t specify whether the second SUV would slot above or below the first model, it’s most likely going to slot below as part of Bentley’s quest to reach 15,000 in annual sales by 2018.
Bentley chief Wolfgang Duerheimer has already said that the first Bentley SUV will be the “Most exclusive, most luxurious, and most expensive SUV in the world.” China is expected to be a critical market for the new SUV, where Bentley is enjoying remarkable success, with 1 of 3 new luxury cars sold in the country a Bentley.
Bentley rival Rolls-Royce, owned by parent BMW, remains noncommittal about its prospects of building an SUV but seems to be leaning in the direction of building one. If Rolls-Royce does decide to build an SUV, it could take the “most exclusive, most expensive” crown from Bentley.
