Mercedes-Maybach SUV Rendered
GL-Based SUV Would be Aimed at Bentley Bentayga
SUVs of all shapes, sizes, and price points have been exploding onto the market, and the ultra-luxury market is no exception. Aside from the established pillars of the market, including Range Rover and the Porsche Cayenne, Bentley is just months away from introducing the Bentayga SUV (the brand’s first), and Rolls Royce seriously considering an entry into the segment. Although Mercedes-Benz has plenty of high-priced SUV models in its brand portfolio, it is reportedly looking into building a Maybach-branded SUV, presumably based on the GL.
The virtual automotive artists at TopSpeed have created a rendering of what a Maybach SUV might look like, with the sub-brand’s signature grille, wheels, and double-M logo on the D-pillar. The “regular” GL is a seven-passenger model, but speculation is the rearmost row may be sacrificed for maximum second-row comfort, with the seats moved back to allow for recline and a footrest. Powertrain details are speculative, but some believe the Maybach model could get a V-12 to justify its opulent price tag, expected to approach or surpass $200,000.
Currently, all GLs are sourced globally from Mercedes-Benz’ Tuscaloosa, Alabama, plant, and presumably, the Mercedes-Maybach version would be as well. How well would buyers respond to an Alabama-built flagship? Some Euro-centric snobs might scoff at such provenance, but the majority of potential buyers probably wouldn’t care.
Maybach’s previous efforts at an ultra-luxury model never took off to the extent parent Daimler expected, but hopping on the SUV bandwagon could be just the brand’s recipe for success this time around.
