Official: Bentley SUV Named Bentayga
Name Combination of “Bentley” and “Taiga”
Bentley has made much of its forthcoming SUV, showering the future model with superlative descriptions as fastest, most luxurious and most expensive. Now you can add another description to that: unusually named. Bentley has officially announced the name of its future model as the Bentley Bentayga. The name is a portmanteau of the words Bentley and Taiga, the world’s largest transcontinental snowforest. It is also the name of a mountain peak in the Canary Islands off the western coast of North Africa.
Whether that name resonates with customers or not is probably inconsequential, as the company has reported very strong interest in the new model well before its official on-sale date. Along with the name announcement, Bentley also released an image of the front fender vent of the Bentayga. Bentley, which is owned by the Volkswagen Group, has invested significantly in its manufacturing facilities in Crewe, England, adding 1,000 jobs.
Still unknown are the exact powertrain details. Among the candidates to power the brand’s first SUV are a 4.0L twin-turbo V-8, the turbocharged 6.0L W-12, a TDI V-8 or V-12, or even a plug-in hybrid powertrain option. If Bentley is serious about taking the “fastest” SUV prize, our money’s on the W-12.
