Throwin’ It Down - The 11th Hour Editorial
Getting Ready For Our Annual Event
When I jumped in the driver seat here at Truckin a while back, I hardly had time to warm the seat up before I realized I had about three weeks to plan this year’s Throwdown event. There were some stressful moments for sure; it tends to happen when there are lawyers or insurance people involved. But the event went off without a hitch and I was told by a handful of people that it was the best year so far. We got a bunch of killer trucks, took a whole lot of photos and video, and just generally had a good time with some old friends and some new ones. I have to say though; I was getting a little envious of all the guys flying past me squealing the tires with ear-to-ear grins on their faces. I have a half-built truck that I was putting together for events just like this sitting in wait until I find the time to get back on it.
At the time of the event, I hadn’t even really driven our resident EcoBoost GT-150. I brought it out because I needed the locking bed to get everything to the event safely. I hadn’t planned on running it or anything, and last year at Throwdown it had not faired very well in the competition. But the truck had been warmed over by Gale Banks Engineering since then, giving us a few more ponies, and the Belltech and Hellwig setup definitely helps in the corners. By the time we were well into the autocross event my curiosity got the best of me. I jumped in and gave it a whirl around the course a few times. The first was just to get a feel for the truck. The second was to really try to record a good time, and the third was to let all hell break loose, and provide plenty of entertainment for everyone by overshooting a few turns, smoking the tires, and taking more than a few cones with me along the way! It was a blast (as you can see by my ear-to-ear grin in the photos), and believe it or not, I put down a time that was right in the middle of the pack. Not bad for the second heaviest truck there with the smallest engine!
Now I can say firsthand what a great time Throwdown is. So I want to personally invite each and every one of you to participate in Throwdown 2015, which is happening at the end of May. All you have to do is fill out the sign-up sheet at the end of the Throwdown coverage elsewhere in this issue. Or you can jump online at truckin.com/throwdown and do the very same thing. You’ve only got until the end of the year because then we’re going to publish a whole bunch of your favorite trucks and let you guys vote on the Top 15. Our goal is to have people from all over the country with all makes, models, and years of street legal truck! Now all you and I need to do is get out there and start wrenching on our rides. May is going to come fast!
Keep on Truckin, -JC
