Mercedes-Benz Teases Portal Axle G500 4x4 2 on Twitter
Spyshots of High-Riding SUV Confirmed
A few weeks ago, we showed you spyshots of a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen that appeared to be equipped with portal axles, giving it much better ground clearance and tucking up the differential “pumpkins” under the body. Today, via an official tweet from Mercedes-Benz corporate, we have confirmation that those spyshots are indeed of a factory-sanctioned project. However, Mercedes is holding off on revealing full details of whether or not the vehicle will be a full-fledged production model or just a concept. For now, it’s calling the G500 4x42 a “show car.”
On the surface, there’s nothing so outlandish as to prevent the 4x42 from going into production, as portal axles are something that Mercedes is familiar with from the G63 AMG 6x6 and, of course, the legendary Unimog. As cool and capable as a portal axle-equipped G-Wagen is, the number of these that will probably see regular off-road action is small. Many will likely be purchased by celebrities and hip-hop stars that dig the donk-ish looks, never mind the fact that the price tag will be well into the six-figure range, possibly approaching or surpassing $200,000. Mercedes promises “more to come later this week,” and we’ll give you the full report as soon as we find out more.
