Designer Paul Smith Creates One-Off Land Rover Defender
Fashion Icon Collaborates with JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations
The Jeep Wrangler and its predecessors, the CJ and Willys MB, may be America’s beloved and original SUV icon, but for Brits, the Land Rover Defender holds a similar place in their hearts. Now, the long-running icon of Britain’s automotive industry is about to get the most extensive redesign in its history. However, there is still plenty of love for the current version among Britain’s elite, among them fashion icon Paul Smith. Smith collaborated with Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) to create a one-off Defender incorporating Smith’s personal touches in the design.
The exterior of the Defender features 27 different colors, designed to evoke the spirit of the British countryside and the British armed forces, of which the Defender has been a fixture for decades. The interior features a mix of black leather and specially selected fabric that Smith designed for American upholstery company Maharam. Other custom touches include a hand-painted bee on the roof, an analog display clock with a custom Paul Smith face, a painted image of keys and coins in the center console compartment, and a satin finish on the exterior mirrors, door handles and wheels. The one-off custom Defender was revealed at Smith’s flagship store in the Mayfair district of London.
