2016 Ford Explorer Platinum Debuts Concert-Quality Sound System
Audio Engineers Toured European Concert Halls for Acoustics
The high-end European brands have Burmester, Bowers & Wilkins, and Bang & Olufsen, but for many, the term “hi-fi” brings to mind the sonic expertise of Sony. Sony has been the premium audio supplier for the Ford brand for the better part of the last decade, and the firm brings its acoustical mastery to the premium sound system in the 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum to provide buyers with a rich, immersive audio experience.
Sony engineers toured many of the great concert halls in Europe, including Vienna, Amsterdam, and Berlin, strategically placing microphones throughout the halls to measure the precise acoustics that could be translated into algorithms that would replicate the experience as closely as possible inside the interior of the new Explorer Platinum. Ford is claiming an industry-first automotive application of Sony’s Live Acoustics and Clear Phase technologies, previously only available in Sony’s premium home audio systems.
The 500-watt system in the Explorer Platinum features 12 high power speakers in 10 locations throughout the cabin. A Class D amplifier provides lossless power to drive the speakers without strain. The speaker coils are also unique, featuring a square design instead of the more conventional round shape for greater energy efficiency and heat dissipation.
