Suburban Texas Hyundai Dealer Becomes Chevy SSR Hot Spot
Dealership Well Known in Niche Truck Enthusiast Community
In business, it’s often tempting to go chasing after “the latest thing” along with everyone else, only to find the marketplace is too crowded with other competitors offering essentially the same product or service. Nevertheless, those willing to go against the grain and do something different are often rewarded for their unconventional approach. Such is the story of Paul Peebles and North Freeway Hyundai in the Houston suburb of Spring, Texas.
Wanting to give its used car department a little more sizzle, Peebles sought out some unique and unusual cars he thought might bring customers in, at least to look. He stumbled upon the Chevrolet SSR, the oddball retro-styled roadster pickup loosely based on the Colorado model at the time. In an interview with Automotive News, Peebles said he acquired one SSR but kept going, often taking the initiative and cold-calling owners or online classified listings to grow the dealership’s inventory of the unique model. The dealership has since become known nationwide as an SSR specialist, and a barbecue and car show is hosted by the dealership for area owners.
You might think Hyundai would be upset by one of its dealerships being so well-known for another brand, but Hyundai North America sales executives say they applaud North Freeway’s approach and said that because the SSR is so unusual and unique, it doesn’t cannibalize or compete with Hyundai’s existing models.
