NHTSA Investigates 2014 Ford Edge Wheel Breakage
One Report of Breakage on 22-Inch Edge Sport Rims
A vehicle’s wheels are a critical component ensuring safety and controllability. So when there’s an issue with the structural integrity of a wheel under presumably normal operating conditions, it’s cause for concern. That’s why the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is conducting an investigation into the 2014 Ford Edge Sport for a report of wheel breakage and separation. According to the agency, it has only received one report of the issue from a consumer, but as many as 20,000 units may be affected. Specifically, Sport models equipped with the 22-inch wheels are subject to the investigation.
According to the report, the driver said the wheel broke in two pieces without warning, forcing the driver off the road and into a ditch. The vehicle reportedly only had 8,500 miles on it at the time of the incident. The 265/40R22 tires on the 2014 Edge Sport have an unusually low profile for crossover tires, making them more susceptible to road damage and impact shocks. Interestingly, the 2015 Edge Sport’s wheels are slightly smaller, with 20-inch wheels standard and 21-inch wheels optional. The Edge Sport has been offered with 22-inch wheels since the model’s mid-cycle refresh for the 2011 model year.
