Euro SUV Rumor Roundup: Macan-Fighting Lotus, Smaller Bentley
Lotus Says SUV Due in 2019 Will Be “Better” Than Macan
If you haven’t noticed already, the world has gone crossover crazy, and it seems no brand is immune. Even the sportiest of the sporty brands—Lotus. According to Auto Express, the brand is aiming for a 2019 launch of a performance-oriented crossover similar in size and mission to the Porsche Macan, but according to Lotus, of course it will be “better.” The vehicle may launch and be exclusive to the China market, at least for a few years. The goal is for the Lotus to be “light and fast,” although when you’re talking about SUVs—even small ones—it’s a relative term. For perspective, the Porsche Macan weighs around 4,400 pounds, or about what most fullsize trucks weighed 20 years ago.
In other news, Autocar reports Bentley is considering adding a second SUV to its lineup below the already-announced Bentayga. However, the decision to start full-fledged development on a second SUV is not a foregone conclusion. Because of its small scale and limited resources (although part of the gargantuan Volkswagen Group), it may come down to between a production version of the Speed 6 concept coupe, or the smaller SUV. From a sales volume standpoint, there’s little question which one would be the better seller. The target sales date for either model would be sometime in 2020 or 2021.
