Westport Announces Propane 2016 Ford F-150
Conversion Gives Full Use of Bed with Underbody Tanks
Westport Innovations, the Canadian engineering firm that specializes in gaseous fuel conversions for trucks, has announced the availability of a single-fuel propane system for the 2016 Ford F-150. Like all 2016 F-150s with the gaseous fuel prep option, the truck will be powered by Ford’s 5.0L DOHC V-8. Unlike some other conversions, the propane tanks are mounted under the body, allowing for full use of the truck bed, a key factor for buyers for whom cargo utility is a priority.
The Westport propane system features a standard 24-gallon, or optional 16-gallon tank, simplified maintenance with a replaceable inline filter, and a fuel pump life expectancy of 150,000 miles. Westport claims the conversion leaves Ford’s standard OEM powertrain and bumper-to-bumper warranty intact. Westport is an approved Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier (QVM).
Westport also offers dual-fuel gasoline/CNG and dedicated CNG conversions for the F-150 and many other popular models. It is also well known for its work with diesel engine maker Cummins for its CNG engine conversions. While some light petroleum gas (LPG, or propane) vehicle are white-sticker eligible in California, it is unknown if the propane or dedicated CNG F-150 will be approved for solo-driver access in the Golden State.
