Bentley Claims Title of World’s Fastest SUV at 187 MPH
British-Built SUV Tops Corporate Cousin Cayenne by 11 MPH
When customers are shelling out well over six figures for a vehicle, the last thing they want to hear is “compromise.” Sumptuous heated and massaging leather seats? Yes. Whisper-quiet cabin? Affirmative. Blistering acceleration and top speed? Absolutely. With its demanding customers in mind, Bentley set out to make its upcoming Bentayga SUV the fastest in the world.
SUVs in particular present an engineering challenge for performance due to their inherently higher aerodynamic drag and wind resistance, as well as higher weights. However, with 6.0L of direct-injected, turbocharged W-12 power, it shouldn’t be an issue for the Bentayga, which is expected to comfortably produce at least 600 hp and likely more than 600 lb-ft of torque. That amount of power helps it push past its corporate cousin from Germany, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S. The Turbo S has a maximum track speed of 176 mph, giving the Bentayga a slim, but decisive, 11 mph edge.
However, the Bentayga’s title of “World’s Fastest SUV” may be short lived with the announcement of a Hellcat-powered Jeep Grand Cherokee, which may try to match or surpass the benchmark set by the Bentayga. The upcoming Rolls-Royce SUV, while sure to be very powerful and fast, likely will not attempt to beat Bentley on top speed, taking a more “dignified” approach to performance.
