Video: Toyota South Africa Builds 450-hp 5.0L V-8 Hilux
Truck Uses Off-The-Shelf Parts To Emulate Race Truck
Let’s be honest: Toyotas generally don’t have the most exciting reputation. With the hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of Camrys, Corollas, and Prii dawdling along our roads, it’s easy to associate Toyota with “vehicular appliance.” However, the company has a long and rich motorsports tradition that goes well beyond its recent involvement in NASCAR. This tradition spans the globe, and some of the company’s far-flung operations come up with awesome one-off vehicles that we would love to see in the showrooms, but sadly, our dreams will probably remain unrequited. Toyota South Africa showed its moxie by stuffing a 450hp 5.0L V-8 out of a Lexus IS-F under the hood of your run-of-the-mill Hilux pickup. The engine nearly triples the factory output of the Hilux’s 3.0L diesel.
The inspiration for the truck was the Dakar rally truck. The goal was to create an experience as close to the race truck as possible in a road-going vehicle. Surprisingly, the stock transmission and differentials were retained but re-geared for the higher rpm range of the V-8 compared to the diesel I-4. Brakes are beefy 14-inch front rotors. Compared to the stock truck, the hot-rod Hilux rides slightly lower, with upgraded springs and dampers. Check out the video below to see this awesome one-off pickup getting sideways in the dirt and making some sweet V-8 music.
