Watch a 1,400hp 2006 Dodge Ram Erupt Into a Fireball on the Dyno
A dyno day is just about as much fun as you can have in a car without going anywhere, and it’s vehicular drama like what we’re about to show you that makes such an event so exciting. In the video embedded below, Shawn Baca’s 2006 Dodge Ram takes to the dyno like a champ, laying down more than 1,000 hp on his third run before the unfortunate, yet exciting, happens. Watch below.
According to various accounts, Baca had laid down runs of more than 1,400 hp that day, but he wanted to hit 2,000, so he went back up for a third run. Less than a minute into the run, after loading the turbo and hitting the gas, the Ram spits a flame, makes some clatter, and ignites a massive fireball that lingers for a few moments after the truck’s motor comes to a rest. Some claim it was a runaway situation, while others said an oversped turbo was to blame. However, the prevailing theory (unconfirmed by anyone but the Internet Illuminati) is that the explosion was caused by a malfunctioning nitrous system that went off before the turbos were making enough boost.
To those of you who feel bad for Baca, who is the lead mechanic at Industrial Injection in Salt Lake City, Utah, he recently took this same truck past his goal mark, hitting 2,000 hp not long ago. So it’s clear he hasn’t let one small setback stop him.
Here's a longer version of the video, which shows his entire dyno run, including a few moments after the explosion.
