Fiat Ducato 4x4 Expedition Camper Show Van Appears at UK Trade Show
Could the Concept Presage an All-Wheel-Drive ProMaster?
Fiat Professional, the team responsible for the Ducato fullsize van, cooked up something very interesting for the 2015 Motorhome and Caravan Show in Birmingham, England, which takes place from October 13 to October 18. The Ducato 4x4 Expedition Camper Show Van is the fruit of the company’s labors in collaboration with 4x4 specialist Automobiles Dangel, body customizer Olmedo Special Vehicles, and interior specialist Technoform.
The permanent all-wheel drive features a viscous coupling, and Dangel raised the ride height and fit the Ducato with off-road tires and wheels. The exterior was beefed up to match the running gear, with wheel arches, skid plates, and a heavy-duty safari-style cargo rack providing some additional practicality and protection.
Inside, Technoform gave the Ducato an interior that would look entirely out of place in the Fiat’s American twin, the Ram ProMaster. While the ProMaster’s interior is finished primarily in hard plastic and bare sheetmetal, the Ducato concept gets a modern dining area, a deployable fullsize bed, and a sophisticated electronics and entertainment suite (including a television in the bedroom). The extended wheelbase provides enough floor space for all those toys, while the high roof enables passengers to stand upright in in their fancy camper. The front seats swivel to face the three-place mid-mounted bench, allowing a group of five to enjoy a family dinner together on the deployable dining table.
Powered by a 2.3L MultiJet-2 I-4 diesel, the Ducato makes a mighty 150 hp. With a rating like that and a curb weight likely in excess of 5,000 pounds, it’s no surprise that campers like these are the bane of former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson’s existence. Still, the camper gets a motor that’s 20 hp stronger than its more pedestrian sibling’s.
However, we can’t help but wonder how well it’d move if it were motivated by the Ram ProMaster’s 3.6L Pentastar V-6. Sure, anything that large is going to be a bit sluggish, but we’d love to have the chance to give it a thorough shakedown on a camping trip sometime. Alas, the odds of the Ducato 4x4 Expedition Camper Van concept making it into production in Europe are slim, so we’d bet an export model badged as the Ram ProMaster is highly unlikely. Even so, Fiat may see fit to offer the Ducato with all-wheel drive, and we're almost positive that feature would do quite well in America's Italian cargo van.
