We Hear: Ram 1500 To Get New Pentastar In 2018, Cherokee Could Get 3.6L
Next-Generation V-6 Will Gradually Spread Throughout FCA Lineup
We’re not ones to mindlessly repeat sketchy rumors found on enthusiast forums. However Allpar.com has a surprisingly accurate track record, having correctly predicted the 6.4L V-8 in the Ram HD models, as well as many other models and details that ultimately came to fruition. The Chrysler Group enthusiast site claims the next vehicles to get the redesigned 3.6L Pentastar V-6 after the Grand Cherokee, besides the obvious Dodge Durango, could be the Jeep Cherokee. The site is also speculating that the Cherokee could get a bump up to the full 3.6L displacement, up from the current 3.2L. To save on recertification costs, the Ram 1500 will likely not get the next-generation engine until the next major redesign expected in 2018.
In our experience, the 3.2L Cherokee has plenty of power, but we wouldn’t complain about a little more. FCA has already announced the horsepower for the Grand Cherokee application as 295, a modest 5 hp bump over the current model. Torque will reportedly get a bigger proportional boost, as well as having more of it at a lower rpm. Among the major changes to the next-generation Pentastar are a much higher 11.3:1 compression ratio, a wider cam-phasing spectrum, and a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system to keep emissions in check.
As most of the rest of the industry is rushing to adopt gasoline direct injection, the new Pentastar retains port fuel injection, at least on naturally aspirated models. Some studies have shown GDIs can emit excessive particulate emissions, making FCA’s seemingly retrograde technology surprisingly prescient of future regulations.
