Revered Lux SUV Gets Updated For Final Model Years

Although a new one is due for the 2019 or 2020 model year, Jeep will update the Grand Cherokee for 2017 with a light cosmetic refresh designed to make the off-road cruiser a little more competitive in its segment.

The changes are tough to spot, but looking closely, there look to be revisions to the grille found in lower trim levels. Adopting the Summit’s honeycomb grille opening trim, the spy vehicle (which looks to be a Limited, based on wheel size) has an upmarket visage befitting Jeep’s much cheaper Range Rover competitor. Other likely changes include updates to the lower front fascia and interior. Plan on Jeep offering the most updated version of its Uconnect infotainment software available.
Underneath the familiar, yet still attractive, skin will be updated powertrains. Chrysler’s excellent 3.6L Pentastar V-6 will get another update featuring more horsepower and better fuel economy. Although it was just updated for the 2016 model year, the 3.6L may receive direct injection for 2017 or 2018, which would almost certainly push its output past 300 hp and 275 lb-ft. Consider our eyebrows raised.
Plan on seeing the 2017 Grand Cherokee in the flesh at an auto show next year, possibly March’s Chicago event. Although the current generation has been on sale since 2011 (with a relatively significant mechanical and cosmetic refresh for 2014), it’s still a relevant, competitive luxury SUV, offering near–Range Rover levels of refinement and performance at a fraction of the Brit’s price. The 2017 update will only help with the Jeep’s good sales performance.
