A New Wind Tunnel for Faster Fuel Savings
Over at GM, there’s a new toy: a $30 million, 35,000-square-foot, reduced-scale wind tunnel that tests clay models (they’re about 40 percent to scale of a vehicle; hence “reduced scale”) to sort out fuel-saving designs quicker than ever before. The tunnel features a rolling road setup with a top speed of 155 mph, and by using the downsized vehicles, aerodynamic engineers can reduce wind drag in fullsize vehicle designs.

Ford Is Giving Other Automakers Robotic Testing Tech
Robotic vehicle-durability testing at Ford is comprised of, according to the Blue Oval, “a control module installed in the test vehicle that controls vehicle steering. Ford-developed bell crank actuators control the throttle and brake pedals with a metal rod. The module is set to follow a preprogrammed course, and the vehicle’s position is tracked by cameras in a central control room and via GPS accurate to plus/minus 1 inch.” Should a vehicle stray, the engineers can stop the vehicle or restart the test, among other things. The vehicles travel down test surfaces made of rough gravel, broken concrete, oversized speed bumps, and other challenges. This is all so that no human testdrivers have to endure this—plus, it saves loads of time. And now Ford is licensing this technology to other automakers for their testing and has noted that some OEMs have already nabbed the patented technology.
