FCA 3.0L EcoDiesel V-6 Among Wards 10 Best Engines For Third Year
Most Repeat Appearances of Any Diesel Engine, Only Truck Engine In List
The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel certainly shook up the 1/2-ton truck world in 2014 when it became the first 1/2-ton diesel in nearly 20 years to be available in all 50 states. Truck buyers have long asked for a light-duty diesel option, offering everyday economy with ample towing and hauling capability. The engine’s excellence has been recognized for the third consecutive year by the judges of WardsAuto, the only time a diesel engine has made three consecutive appearances on the prestigious list. The 3.0L EcoDiesel V-6 was also the only pickup powerplant on this year’s list. The 2016 Volvo XC90’s compound turbo/supercharged 2.0L I-4 represented the SUV category.
Although engine output remains unchanged at 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque from when it was introduced for the 2014 model year, the engine received a calibration update for 2016 to improve throttle response at part-throttle and acceleration from a stop. Other diesels in contention for the award this year included the 5.0L turbodiesel V-8 in the Nissan Titan XD and the 2.8L Duramax I-4 offered in the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. The 3.5L gas V-6 in the 2016 Toyota Tacoma was also among the 31 nominees but did not make the final cut.
