Jeep Adds Overland Model to Top of Cherokee Lineup
High-Lux SUV Adds Features To Segment
Unveiled at the 2016 New England International Auto Show today, the Jeep Cherokee Overland is the midsize SUV’s new range-topper, cribbing the name and prestige from one of the Grand Cherokee’s higher trim levels. The Cherokee Overland, which will start at $34,695, offers Jeep buyers a few extra amenities that justify its price.
The front end features a chromed front grille and chin spoiler, while body-color wheel flares and rocker cladding give the Jeep a monochromatic appearance. New wheels measure 18 inches, and standard bi-xenon headlights add some functionality to the fancy duds. However, inside is where the Overland really distinguishes itself.
A leather-topped instrument panel, Nappa leather seating, Berber floor mats, Overland-exclusive Zebrano wood trim, and a standard power memory driver seat and power passenger seat wrap the vehicle occupants in rich materials. A standard Alpine audio system comes bundled with the Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, navigation, HD Radio, and SiriusXM travel and traffic apps. A standard power liftgate, blind-spot monitoring, and premium insulation come along for the ride, among other features.
With 8.2 inches of ground clearance and the available Active Drive II 4x4 system, the Overland likely won’t have the boulder-hopping chops of its Trailhawk sibling, but it should still do just fine for most soft-roading and inclement-weather scenarios. The Cherokee’s 3.2L Pentastar V-6 making 271 hp is optional on 4x2 Overlands and standard on 4x4s. The V-6 and four-wheel drive add $3,700 to the bottom line, according to Jeep’s website.
That price represents a decent value, giving buyers off-road capability unavailable in most other midsize crossovers and more luxury than comparably priced SUVs. The monochromatic paint scheme and Cherokee’s unique styling won’t be to everyone’s tastes, but for the best in Jeep luxury, the Cherokee Overland represents a reasonably priced, efficient option.
