SPY VIDEO: Ford F-150 Diesel Caught Testing on Public Roads!

Engine Note Gives No Doubt What’s Under Hood -- Is It Coming to Showrooms?

Jan 28, 2016
Last month, we brought you spy photos of what we believed to be a prototype Ford F-150 diesel testing, based on its venturi exhaust tip, a usual giveaway of a diesel engine under the hood. Now, we have footage of what may be the same or another mule testing around Dearborn, with a clearly audible diesel engine note. The cadence and tone suggest it’s a six-cylinder, adding credence to the rumors that it’s the same 3.0L V-6 found beneath the hood of the new Range Rover Td6. As installed in the Rangies, the engine makes 254 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. If it comes to market with that same level of power, that would give it a 14hp and 20 lb-ft edge over the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. However, don’t expect Ram to let the grass grow between its toes. A more powerful EcoDiesel could also be in the works.

The diesel F-150 could also come to market with a 10-speed automatic, which is confirmed for the 2017 F-150 Raptor and will likely be offered across the F-150 at some point. The combination of the diesel and the 10-speed could make the F-150 the first fullsize truck to crest the symbolic 30 mpg highway mark. Does an F-150 diesel signal Ford’s abandonment of its aggressively marketed EcoBoost turbo GDI strategy? Not necessarily. It is more likely that Ford is going for an “all of the above” strategy with EcoBoost, gas V-8, CNG/bi-fuel, and now, diesel. Additionally, many large commercial fleets are all-diesel, and offering an F-150 diesel would simplify fueling logistics for those fleets that don’t necessarily need the size or capability of a Super Duty. Are you excited at the prospect of an F-150 diesel? Would you buy one?
