GM Adds eAssist to the Silverado and Sierra
GM has added its new eAssist technology to a limited number of ’16 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks in California. This is a big deal, because it’s like getting a mild hybrid pickup with improved fuel economy and kind of a bargain price. The setup includes the eAssist propulsion system, lithium-ion battery pack, 5.3L EcoTec V-8, and eight-speed auto trans. The Silverado is estimated to get 24 mpg highway.

’17 Ford Transit Changes
The ’17 Ford Transit lineup sees some improvements for the new model year. This includes configurations, so you can now get a Transit 350 regular-wheelbase van with single rear wheel and 9,500 GVWR (and chassis cab and cutaway). Additionally, the 3.7L has become standard on the wagon and dual-rear-wheel version (which means a price cut and CNG or LPG potential). Various other newbies that are standard or available for the wagons and/or vans include a walk-through center console, heated driver and front passenger seats, passenger-side power running board, and high-capacity upfitter switch upgrades such as heavy-duty alternator, passenger modified vehicle wiring system, dual HD batteries, and an auxiliary fusebox. And the E-series stripped chassis and cutaway vehicles have a new 6.2L V-8 from the Super Duty, meaning the options are now that or the 6.8L V-10.

New Diesel for the Express and Savana
GM’s fullsize vans, the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana, are getting a new diesel option for 2017: the 2.8L I-4 found under the hoods of the Colorado and Canyon midsize pickups. In the vans, the diesel will be mated exclusively to an eight-speed automatic, and it replaces the 6.6L Duramax V-8 in the lineup. The Duramax 2.8L will be available in cargo or passenger variants, in either long- or short-wheelbase form

’17 Nissan Titan ½-Ton
Nissan has decided to offer a ½-ton version of the XD, and while it’s similar, it’s not. For example, the ’17 standard Titan will have a totally different chassis, and it will be almost 15 inches shorter than the XD, but the same width. It will have the 5.6L Endurance V-8 and a seven-speed automatic, making 390 horses and 401 lb-ft of torque. Expect a V-6 to come. The truck will be available in both two- and four-wheel drive and in Crew, King, and Single cab, with 5½-, 6½-, and 8-foot-long beds.

’16 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Worker Van
Meet the new ’16 Sprinter Worker model—with a near-bargain price of $32,495. Not to mention, it’s a base model with tons of standard equipment—including a 2.1L diesel and seven-speed auto transmission, making 161 horses and 266 lb-ft of twist, plus roof load capacity of 660 pounds, 319.1 cubic feet of cargo volume, 137.4 inches of cargo floor length, 66½ inches of interior standing feet, a steel floor, power windows, tilting/telescoping steering wheel, and much more. It also has a service interval of up to 20,000 miles. Three packages are available: Convenience (creature comforts), Utility (Convenience plus rear step, LED cargo lights, and other items), and Overtime (Convenience, Utility, and driver-assist tech).

Bridgestone and PPG Get Money From Government for New Fuel-Efficient Truck Tires
The U.S. Department of Energy is handing over money to help Bridgestone and PPG jointly develop more fuel-efficient truck and bus radial tires. At the heart of it will be PPG’s Agilon performance silica, a tire additive. The plan is to give the DOE a prototype tire that is not only the same or better in the wear and strength departments as what we’re used to but also sees 4 to 6 percent better fuel efficiency.

Realtree and Midnight Editions
The Chevy Silverado is getting the ’16 Realtree Edition for the 1500 LTZ Z71, which equals an outdoorsy theme: camo graphics and Realtree logos inside and out. There’s also some black theming going on—blackout trim, black Bow Ties, and black 20-inch wheels.
Another addition to the Chevy family is the Midnight Special Edition, which has graduated to now be available for the ’16 Silverado 1500 Z71 and 2500HD Z71, as well as the Colorado Z71. As you’ve correctly guessed, this all means black theming—and it’s all mated to serious off-road components.

Lug Nuggets
•Is Fiat Chrysler going to merge with or allow itself to be bought by another automaker?
•Visa is developing a fuel app and a parking app, both integrating with your vehicle. The parking app would ensure you only paid for the actual amount of time you parked, while the fuel app would alert you when you were low on fuel and let you know where the nearest fill-’er-up could be done. Once there, all you’d have to do is push a button on the app to pay for fuel.
•Toyo Tires is the Official Tire of the Anaheim Ducks.
•How does having power tools from Bosch sound? The company might be entering that market.
•Nissan developed a smart chair. What more can we say? OK, we’ll say that it’s an office chair that uses the same park-assist technology with automatic steering in vehicles to help it move to a designated position.
