Mercedes-Benz Teases Fastback GLC Coupe for New York
Two-Door Style for the Four-Door Crossover
Coming to the 2016 New York International Auto Show, the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe was teased on YouTube yesterday, with the company showing off a camouflaged fastback SUV growling around a test track.
Following in the footsteps of its GLE big brother, the smaller GLC-Class SUV will be getting a sportier-styled variant to accompany the more formal, practical version. The GLC Coupe will likely take a heap of inspiration from the Concept GLC Coupe shown at Auto Shanghai 2015 last April. That means we should expect slim taillights, gracefully tapered hatchback glass, and a chop-top roofline and windows.
What lies under the sheetmetal is anyone’s guess, as the regular GLC comes in just three variants: the recently revealed GLC43 AMG and the GLC300, in either rear- or all-wheel drive. Turbocharged engines power both, with a 3.0L V-6 driving the GLC43 and a 2.0L I-4 motivating the GLC300. The GLC Coupe will likely take both forms, and the exhaust note audible in the teaser video sounds distinctly like an AMG product.
There’s also the possibility of a third powertrain slotting between the 300 and the 43, with perhaps a detuned version of the latter’s V-6 producing around 300 hp. That vehicle would make a lockstep rival for the similarly powered BMW X4 xDrive35i, while also offering a tweener model for those who want a bit more power but don’t want to step into a whole-hog AMG model.
Due to be revealed March 23, the GLC Coupe’s secrets will soon be revealed. Stay tuned.
