Land Rover Classic Debuts 1948 Series I “Reborn”

Fully Restored SUV One of 25 Originals Earmarked for Restoration

Apr 7, 2016
Land Rover Classic, the arm of the English company responsible for keeping vintage Land Rovers on the road, debuted the first “Reborn” 1948 Series I at Techno-Classica in Essen, Germany, this week.

The Reborn initiative is a program launched by Land Rover Classic, and it’s comprised of 25 hand-selected examples of the 1948 Series I, which will each be treated to a full restoration according to the factory’s 1948 specs. In order to preserve authenticity, only Land Rover Classic parts will be used, and five period-correct paint finishes are offered: Light Green, Bronze Green, RAF Blue, Dove Grey, and Poppy Red.

Each of the 25 lucky patrons of Reborn will be able to select their preferred restoration base, and a Land Rover Classic representative will guide them through the build process from start to finish. Each member of the Reborn initiative will roll off the new Classic workshop floor, which is located within the original production facility in Solihull, England.

The first company-restored Series I was treated to Bronze Green paint and a tan canvas roof. The interior is just as mint as the exterior, with attractive green upholstery for each of the three front seats. As on most Land Rover Series, the cockpit is spartan and purposeful, just right for a rugged vehicle originally intended for sheepherding and farming.
The Reborn series of vehicles underscores Land Rover’s commitment to preserving its heritage. Its Classic division “demonstrates the business’ commitment to supporting customers with original and genuine parts for Land Rover models that have been out of production for more than 10 years,” says Classic director Tim Hannig. (Curiously, that criterion now includes such vehicles as the much-maligned Freelander).

There isn’t much in the world that’s cooler than a Land Rover Series SUV, and these Reborn Series Is will likely cost a substantial amount more than even the company’s brand-new models. Still, thanks to the SUV’s legendary reputation and devoted enthusiast following, we’ve no doubt each one will find a happy, loving home.
