Perps Beware -- Ford Offering Stealth Light Bar for Police Utility Explorers

Integrated Lights Give Low-Key Appearance

Apr 7, 2016
We’ve already seen it starting to happen. Traffic dropping back behind black or white Explorers with a roof rack, because from a distance, they’re nearly indistinguishable from a Police Interceptor Utility. The SUV has now become the de facto “cop car” for many agencies across the country, and its ubiquity has made it plenty familiar to drivers. However, Ford is about to throw potential scofflaws another curveball with the introduction of an integrated visor lightbar in the Police Interceptor Utility.
In addition to obviating the need for a roof-mounted lightbar, the integrated visor lightbar also takes up less room that aftermarket visor lightbars, offering equivalent headroom to the other Police Interceptor Utility models with roof lights. The integrated LED lights also have multiple functions, from bright-white “takedown” lights, to colored strobes. The lights can be configured for red-blue, red-red, or blue-blue strobes. The light intensity can also be adjusted down to 20 percent and has auto-dimming capability. The integrated light bar can be ordered on 2017 Police Interceptor Utility models.
The Explorer-based Police Interceptor Utility has proven to be an overwhelming favorite of law enforcement agencies across the country for its cargo capability and capacity, ride comfort, and ample power, especially when equipped with the available 365hp 3.5L EcoBoost V-6.
