Ford Tests 2017 Super Duty with Camper Simulator

Truck Tested for Every Use Scenario

May 9, 2016
When you have a truck as capable as the Ford Super Duty, it’s imperative that it’s tested for every conceivable usage scenario. For heavy-duty trucks, that’s a lot of different uses. Among those is a slide-in camper. The addition of a fully equipped camper can add as much as 7,000 pounds to the back of the truck, which can have a dramatic effect on the stability, acceleration, braking, and handling dynamics of the truck. To test the stability and safety of the new 2017 Super Duty in that usage scenario, Ford has come up with a test jig that simulates the weight and weight distribution of a fully equipped slide-in camper, including the weight of water, fuel, supplies, and amenities.
In this video, the 2017 Super Duty is put through its paces at Ford’s Arizona proving grounds with the camper simulator jig in place. The new Super Duty has more than 10 sensors that monitor vehicle stability at up to 100 times per second, ensuring safety and stability even in the most demanding and challenging usage scenarios. Like it’s best-selling 1/2-ton F-150, the 2017 Super Duty has adopted an aluminum body, allowing Ford to put the weight savings back into added towing and payload capacity. Final towing and payload figures will be released closer to the truck’s on-sale date this fall.
