The recalled 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the momentary return to center shifter will get a software update that will add an “Auto Park” feature that will prevent the vehicle from rolling when the driver’s door is open.
This recall comes after a freak accident involving Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin, where he was found dead pinned against a security gate by his vehicle, which, recent news confirmed, was a Jeep Grand Cherokee that was under recall. FCA began a recall of 811,586 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Chrysler 300 sedans that had the affected shifter in April after an NHTSA investigation found there was a safety issue with the shifter.

According to the technical document sent to dealers the software update requires the power control module, transmission control module, radio frequency hub, and instrument panel cluster to all be reprogrammed. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will begin notifying owners of 2014-2015 3.6L V6 and 5.7L V-8 powered models by the end of the week. EcoDiesel and SRT models will be recalled this summer.
While there are chimes that alert you the driver the vehicle is not in park when the door is opened and proper parking brake usage should prevent any accidents, there have been several hundred complaints this year. Owners of affected Jeeps should take their vehicles in as soon as they get the recall notice to prevent any more unfortunate accidents.
