SPIED: Ford F-150 Diesel Testing With 3.0L Diesel

“Lion” V-6 Coming for 2017

We took a pretty good look yesterday at what changes Ford will make to the 2018 F-150 in its midcycle refresh, and almost as soon as we clicked “publish,” we got these, a fresh batch of images showing Ford testing its fullsize truck with a 3.0L diesel engine.

A 3-liter has been rumored for the F-150 for some time, but these images all but confirm it. Looking closely at the rear window reveals the emissions calibration code: JFC1-3.0-966, depicting a control unit code, engine displacement, and vehicle tag number. That all-important “3.0” proves an engine of that displacement will power the F-150 oil-burner, not the 3.2L Power Stroke I-5 found in other Ford products.

Further proof of the compression-ignition engine comes via the Venturi exhaust tip, which is found almost exclusively on diesel engines to help improve emissions efficiency. Additionally, spy photographers reported hearing a faint diesel clatter unlike that of a gas engine and distinctly different from a 3.5L EcoBoost V-6. Additionally, emissions-control equipment can be seen under the driver's side of the truck's bed, indicating a DEF tank or other exhaust aftertreatments.

Ford will likely source its motor from overseas, as Ram does with the VM Motori-designed EcoDiesel V-6. One possible option? The 3.0L V-6 (called Lion) found under the hoods of certain Jaguar and Land Rover products. In the American-market Range Rover, the so-called Td6 produces 440 lb-ft at 1,750 rpm, compared to the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel’s 420 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm. Ford could even retune the engine for more low-end torque if it really wants to add insult to injury.

We should get a closer look at Ford’s plans for its diesel F-150 at an upcoming auto show, perhaps the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show in November or the 2017 North American International Auto Show in January.
