2017 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Spied Right at Home in The Desert

Chevy’s midsize pickup testing in the desert

A couple of years ago, Chevrolet introduced us to the Colorado ZR2 concept, and we were impressed. We have been hoping they would actually build this truck, and after the latest spy shots showing the ZR2 testing in the desert, it appears the production version will be pretty cool. With Toyota, Ford, and Ram all building off-road-capable machines that are very popular, the Chevy Colorado ZR2 will add solid competition to an impressive trail ready segment.

Nothing has officially been announced from Chevrolet on the ZR2, but the spy shots definitely show aggressive off-road truck than even the Trail Boss. While the cab and bed may be the same as the current-generation Colorado, the covered front-end and aggressive rear wheel arches look very similar to the original concept. Even with the front end covered, bold front grille, projector style headlights, hood scoop, and flared front fenders can be spotted, which will give this midsized pickup a burly looking front-end.
The front independent front suspension appears to feature beefier lower control arms and the rumor is the shocks are quite a bit larger than the Z71 option, giving the ZR2 the performance to handle desert terrain straight from the factory. With improved approach and departure angles thanks to redesigned front and rear bumpers, getting hung-up on obstacles shouldn’t be a problem.

With either a 3.6L V-6 engine or the 2.8L turbocharged diesel, owners will have engine options for this off-road-ready pickup. Since we can’t see inside we expect the interior to be similar to the current generation, with only minor detail improvements.
While this production model ZR2 looks pretty cool in the spy shots, we don’t see the front mounted winch that was present in the original concept, fingers crossed that it’s just covered, nor do we see the rock sliders that looked so good on the concept. The Chevy Colorado ZR2 is expected to be around by the end of the year.
