2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Starts at $41,700

Highly-Anticipated New Model Comes With Steep Price Hike

Aug 3, 2016
When we tested the 2015 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro at our 2015 Pickup Truck of the Year competition, each judge walked away in awe of the midsize rig’s fantastic off-road capability. However, more than a few judges commented on the steep price tag, which at the time was around $38,000. If you think that’s a tough tab to swallow for a midsizer, brace yourself for the pricing of the 2017 model. The 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro, which initially will be offered only in the Double (Crew) Cab configuration, will start at $41,700 with a manual transmission, including $940 destination. If you want an automatic, be prepared to pony up an additional $2,000, for a grand total of $43,700.
What exactly do you get for that princely sum? For starters, TRD-tuned Fox front and rear internal-bypass 2 1/2-inch shocks, TRD front springs giving a 1-inch lift, progressive-rate rear leaf springs, Rigid Industries LED foglights, a “TRD Pro” front skid plate, a “TOYOTA” heritage block-letter grille, generous “TRD Pro” badging, and a stainless cat-back exhaust. Based on experience with prior models we have little doubt the Tacoma TRD Pro will be a formidable off-road machine.
Even the price seems somewhat reasonable when a well-equipped Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon rolls off the lot for north of $45,000. The long-anticipated ZR2 off-road model, which mercifully abandons the snowplow-like air dam on the rest of the Colorado lineup for a front skidplate and a more rock-friendly approach angle, will likely approach if not surpass $50,000 fully equipped. We’re fans of the nimbleness and smart size of midsize trucks, but not their inflated pricetags. Do you think the asking price for Toyota’s new midsize off-road hero is reasonable or extortionary?
