2018 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Spied on Video

Wider Stance, Old-School Style Evident on Benz’ World-Beating SUV

Sep 16, 2016
Mercedes-Benz was spotted testing the next-generation G-Class SUV on European roads recently, as shown on a YouTube video uploaded by “Carlcox84 Automotive.”
Although the SUV looks very much the same as it has since its debut as the Gelandewagen in 1979, there are some subtle differences visible on the new one. The most obvious change is a much wider stance, evident by scrutinizing the windshield and front grille. The move to thicken up the G-Wagen is likely motivated by the current SUV’s tippy handling characteristics, particularly since the G-Class is rarely taken off-road anymore, negating one reason for its narrow track width.

And although the prototypes in the video retain the current G-Class’ slab sides and boxy profile, certain bits look to be smoothed out, particularly up front. We also expect widespread use of aluminum and other lightweight materials in the new Wagen, helping bring the old-school SUV into the modern era from an efficiency standpoint.

Mercedes-Benz tried to replace the G-Class once before with the GL-Class SUV, but die-hard customers weren’t convinced the smooth, modern family-hauler could fill the Gelandewagen’s shoes. After public outcry, Benz recommitted to the G-Class as long as its fans demanded it. Whether the boxy SUV’s devotees will remain committed to the new SUV remains to be seen, and we’re a little disappointed the current model’s distinctive, narrow stance is going away, but it’s still good to see the legendary profile intact.
