Land Rover Teases 2018 Discovery With a Skydiving Bear Grylls

Company Releases LR4 Replacement’s Full-Frontal as Well

Sep 7, 2016
Land Rover is drumming up a lot of commotion for its new 2018 Discovery, giving the fullsize SUV its own skydiving stunt featuring Bear Grylls.
As shown in the YouTube video below, the stunt is a grab for publicity for the new Disco’s seven-seat interior, which can be reconfigured using a smartphone app. While diving from an impressively high altitude, Bear uses his smartphone to deploy the middle and rear seats of the large SUV, which are power operated.
Power-operated, smartphone-actuated seating may seem a bit like overkill, but in actuality, it’s not a bad idea. It would make loading cargo a bit more seamless, as a Discovery driver could fold the seats while walking from the store exit to the car. In the same vein, the carpool driver could deploy the seats while walking through the parking lot, meaning he or she wouldn’t have to unfold them with five anxious toddlers are waiting on the curb.
Along with the video, Land Rover released the first official image of the Discovery, showing the SUV’s full-frontal in all its glory. As expected, the boxy LR4’s lines have been smoothed for its transition into the Discovery. The overall look is very Explorer-like, which is a bit unfortunate. On the plus side (for the nerds, anyway), it also looks very much like a Stormtrooper’s helmet. Indeed, a white Discovery with darkened headlamp bezels would be a dead ringer for FN-2187, from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The LR4 replacement will hit the market in mid-2017.
