Jeep Boss Mike Manley Hints Top-Spec Grand Wagoneer Could Crest $100k

Jeep Targeting Range Rover With Three-Row Lux SUV

Speaking at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, Jeep chief Mike Manley hinted the brand would be moving significantly upmarket when the Grand Wagoneer hits dealers toward the end of 2018. According to a report appearing in Auto Express, Manley thinks top-spec Grand Wagoneer SUVs could potentially compete with lux models like the Range Rover and Porsche Cayenne.
Such lofty goals necessitate a lofty price tag, and the Grand Wagoneer will oblige. “Pushing the car up to $130,000 to $140,000 may be possible, but we need to establish Grand Wagoneer in its own right first,” Manley told the UK-based magazine.

We think that last clause in his statement means the initial batch of Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUVs will likely be substantially cheaper. We expect the Wagoneer to align with lower-end trim levels of the Grand Cherokee, possibly starting at around $40,000. The extra-luxurious Grand Wagoneer could start at $50,000, justifying its higher price with added features and amenities.

From there, it’s totally possible that ticking every option box could yield a Grand Wagoneer that’s priced more like a Range Rover, which starts at $84,950. Furthermore, with an enginehouse that may include a version of the turbocharged V-8 found in the upcoming Maserati Levante, a high-performance Grand Wagoneer SRT could be on the docket as well, and it’s that model that will likely push Jeep past the $100,000 mark for the first time.

The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will be based on the same architecture as the next-generation Grand Cherokee, which is expected in 2019. Stretched longer and wider than the Grand Cherokee, the Wagoneer will be a three-row large SUV sized like the Land Rover Discovery and Range Rover. In fact, those two vehicles may be Jeep’s intended targets, with the Wagoneer taking on the three-row Discovery and the Grand Wagoneer fighting both the midsize Range Rover Sport and fullsize Range Rover.
Does Jeep have the stones to tackle its English off-road equivalent in the six-figure territory? We think it does, with the current Grand Cherokee offering as much luxury and performance as other luxury SUVs—in its top trim, at least. And lest we forget, the original Wagoneer was one of the first luxurious SUVs on the market in the United States, a vehicle that ultimately inspired the Rover Company’s entry into the segment.
