2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Earns NHTSA 5-Star Rating

Fourth Consecutive Year of Top Government Safety Rating

Nov 29, 2016
The 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee once again earned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 5-Star safety rating. This marks the fourth consecutive year the popular SUV has been awarded the accolade. The NHTSA tests include a full frontal collision test, side impact, and side impact pole test. Unlike the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tests, the NHTSA ratings do not factor in advanced collision avoidance technologies such as automatic emergency braking (AEB), which is offered as an option on the Grand Cherokee.

The 2017 Grand Cherokee has not yet been tested by the IIHS. The 2016 model received a top “Good” score in every category except the small overlap front test, which it received a “Marginal” rating. The NHTSA 5-star rating applies only to the 4x4 model. The 2WD Grand Cherokee achieved a 4-star score due to scoring lower on the rollover test.

The forward collision warning and AEB system in the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee features a new “sensor-fusion” technology, which combines camera and radar signals for a more precise and accurate measurement of speed and distance to the safety systems. The collision warning system is operable at all speeds, and full-stop emergency braking can be engaged at speeds less than 25 mph.
