Report: U.S.-Spec Ford EcoSport to Debut in Los Angeles
Debut Leaked By DJ Hired for Launch Party
The Ford EcoSport B-segment crossover has proven to be a hit in foreign markets in which it has launched, with more than 250,000 units sold globally in 2015. The Chevrolet Trax and Buick Encore crossovers have also proven to be surprise hits for General Motors in the U.S. market. The timing seems to be perfect for a B-segment crossover from Dearborn, and according to hip-hop artist DJ Khaled, that’s exactly what will be coming at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show. Automotive News reports that the rapper dropped the news on his Snapchat account ahead of the vehicle’s official unveiling.
We expect the Fiesta-based EcoSport to include Ford’s popular Sync3 multimedia interface on higher-trim models, and Ford will likely offer the 1.0L I-3 EcoBoost engine as an option, if not standard. The exterior-mounted spare tire is likely to disappear on the U.S. model. The EcoSport is currently built at plants in Brazil, India, Thailand, and Russia. The U.S.-spec model may be built in Mexico. The EcoSport is expected to join an all-new Expedition, redesigned Explorer, and revived Bronco in the next few years in Ford’s SUV lineup. The EcoSport will likely debut in mid-to-late 2017 as a 2018 model.
