1958 International Model A-100 Custom Travelette Utility Pickup - Truck Trend Archives
Six-Pack People Pickup
It was 1957 and International had something special planned for its 50th Anniversary. "A New Kind of Pickup Truck," read the slogan. The maker introduced a pickup that could haul more people. Not only that, but the redesigned A-series would get a new integrated look. The sleek modern lines, dubbed Action-Styling by International, were quite a change from those of its more curvy predecessor. Up front, parking lights are incorporated into the headlight bezel and bookend the chrome trapezoidal grille. The leading edge of the hood has a curved profile, leaving an opening above the grille surround to create an air scoop. Chrome body and rear window trim help accent the two-tone paint scheme. The greenhouse is tall and wide, with a curved windshield. The cab configuration is described as follows in the International brochure:
"The front portion of the Cab is identical with the advanced design International Anniversary line Custom Cab in roominess, comfort, and convenience of operation. The addition of a full size rear seat, with access through a second curb-side door, doubles the passenger capacity and multiplies the utility value of this unique vehicle."
The bed features more Action-styling with an chrome-trimmed sculpted tail section that has bullet taillights and reflectors. The easy-drop tailgate utilizes spring-loaded cables that support the gate when under load and retract into body when not in use.
Internal business demands at International kept it from being as productive as it could have been in 1958. Production numbers dropped to their lowest since WWII. The styling was "updated" for model year 1959, which makes these earlier trucks one of the more handsome of their lineage.
